Why we're building it

Grassroots is where the game is kept alive

We're two players. We came up through the game at its highest level, where somebody else handles the schedule, the programme, the video and the feedback. Then we went back to the clubs we came from — where the same season is held together by a group chat, a spreadsheet, and one volunteer who never gets a night off.

Nurture it

Clubs don't fold for lack of talent

They fold when running them becomes a second job. Take the admin away and the volunteer stays another season — and the club grows.

Respect it

A squad is a set of lives

Thursday, 19:30, Pitch 2. Someone's shift, someone's lift, someone's kid. Managing a team is managing people's weeks, and the software should act like it knows that.

Grow it

Progress shouldn't stop at the top

At elite level you get a programme, your numbers and your clips. There's no good reason a 3rd XV player or a U16 shouldn't get the same.

8 Still plays

Built by people who've stood on the touchline in February.

We've both printed a team sheet at 11pm on a Friday and chased eleven people for an answer that was already in the chat somewhere. This is the tool we wanted then.

So every screen has to earn its place on a Tuesday night. If it doesn't help you run Saturday, it doesn't ship.

Core concepts

One model, two surfaces

Sideline models a club the way a club actually works — an organisation, its teams, and the people in them, each with the right level of access.

CLUBOrganisation

ROLESAdmin · Coach · Player · Guardian

A club, the way a club is

Sport, season, country, timezone and colour all live on the club — so a side in Auckland and a side in Amsterdam run the same product on their own clock and their own calendar. Multi-sport and multi-team from the schema up, never bolted on later.

Coaches on a screen, players in a pocket

Coaches and admins run the week from the web dashboard. Players and parents get a mobile app where the next event and one-tap reply are the first thing they see.

One season, one source of truth

People, schedule, availability, selection, attendance, training, video and comms sit in one model. Change something once and every device sees it — live.

Your colours, not ours

The club's accent colour carries across web and app, contrast-checked so it always stays legible. The crest leads; we sign quietly underneath.

Inside the product

What's in the dashboard

Six destinations, and nothing else in the sidebar. Everything a coach does in a week happens in one of them.

Squad · Availability
The Sideline dashboard showing the availability grid: the sidebar on the left with Home, Squad, Schedule, Training, Video and Chat, and a grid of players against upcoming fixtures.
↔ Scroll to see the full screen
The availability grid. Names down the left, fixtures across the top, green / amber / red. The sidebar on the left is the whole product. Note the colour — that maroon is the club's, pulled from their crest. Ours never appears.

Squad

Who's playing. Four views of the same question, from "who might be" to "who actually turned up".

  • Availability — the grid. Names down the left, fixtures across the top, sortable and filterable.
  • Reply — what the player sees. Going, Maybe or Can't in two taps; the grid updates itself.
  • Selection — pick the starting side and bench from whoever's available. Draft it, then publish.
  • Attendance — mark who turned up. The gap between said going and turned up is the number worth watching.
Available Limited Out

Schedule

Set the week in five minutes. Fixtures, training and meet times, in one place the whole squad can see.

  • Matches, training and club events — with opponent, home/away, pitch and meet time
  • Recurring sessions repeat themselves for the whole season
  • Cancel a session and it's marked cancelled for everyone, instantly
  • One shared calendar — the squad sees a change the moment you make it

Training

The part that grows players. A coach builds a block once; every athlete gets their own numbers.

  • Program builder — sets × reps × %1RM, per lift, per block
  • Each athlete's working weight is calculated from their own maxes
  • No max on record? The platform estimates it from the position benchmark
  • Players log the session on their phone; the coach sees who did the work

Video

The clip is where an amateur player learns fastest — and the reason anyone under twenty opens a club app.

  • Upload the match once; it streams to every device without re-encoding
  • Coach notes with clickable timestamps — jump straight to the moment
  • Comments and @mentions, so the breakdown happens in one place
  • Tag players into clips; each one gets their own highlights
  • Visibility per video: staff, team or whole club

Chat

Get off WhatsApp. Team comms in the same place as the fixture they're about.

  • One channel per team, seeded from the active roster — nobody gets forgotten
  • Messages sync live across every device that has the team open
  • Adult-to-minor direct messages are blocked by default

Home & club

The layer above the team — for the people who run the club, not just a squad.

  • Switch between clubs and teams from anywhere in the app
  • Roster with roles per member: admin, coach, staff, player, guardian
  • Invite a whole squad with a share link or a 6-character join code
  • Passwordless sign-in — no app-store scavenger hunt, no forgotten passwords
Training · Program
The training screen: one player selected, their working weights calculated from their own one-rep maxes, next to a panel comparing those maxes against the front-row benchmark.
Training. Bram's working weights, calculated from Bram's maxes — 4 × 5 @ 80% of a 215kg squat is 172.5kg, and the plates are counted for him.
Squad · Selection
The selection screen: available players on the left, the starting fifteen assembled by position on the right, with a draft team sheet ready to publish.
Selection. The starting XV built from whoever's available, still marked draft. Nobody sees it until the coach publishes.

What a committee will ask

The parts nobody sees, done properly

Youth sport deserves more than a privacy policy. These three are structural — built into the database, not left as settings an admin can forget.

Safeguarding

Guardians are linked to the minors they look after and can answer for them. Adult-to-minor direct messages are blocked at the data layer. Every minor record carries an audit trail.

Isolation

Every club's data is separated by row-level security in the database. One club can never see another's, whatever happens in the app above it.

No lock-in

Hosted in the EU under GDPR — the strictest privacy rules there are, applied to every club wherever it plays. Export everything, any time. If a committee ever decides to leave, nothing is held hostage.

What it costs

Three promises, before a price

We haven't set the numbers yet. We have decided how it will work, and these three won't move whatever the price turns out to be.

The free tier

Free is a real product

Schedule, availability, replies, attendance, roster and team chat — enough to run a whole season on. Not a trial that expires in the middle of one.

Who pays

Players and parents never do

Nobody hits a paywall for answering "can you play Saturday?". The whole squad has to be on it for any of it to work, so the club pays — not the people in it.

How it's billed

By the season, not the seat

One bill, once a season, the way a club budget already works. No per-member arithmetic, and no penalty for a squad that grows.

The numbers themselves we're still working out — deliberately, and with clubs rather than at them. If you're reading this you're probably one of them: tell us what a season is worth where you play, and we'll build the plan around that.

In one line

Give every club one calm home for the season — so the people who keep grassroots sport running can get back to coaching it.

Free to get organised. Worth paying for to get better. Built by two people who've been on both sides of the touchline.
